Collect

E te Ariki, whakaorangia mātou,
kia kaua e koropiko ki te mana tangata me te ao pūtaiao.
Tiakina kei taka mātou ki te whakaaro ko mātou kē te atua,
engari ia, ko te whakaiti.
He whakamoemiti ki a koe,
e tō mātou Atua; ka whakamana te īnoi.
Āmine.

Save us, Lord,
from the worship of power or science.
Save us from making you in our image,
and keep us humble.
Praise to you our God; you answer prayer.
Amen.

Jesus the Healer (Mark 5:21-43)

Today's story is about Jesus healing a woman and a girl

Discussion Questions

In a culture that respected men and often put women second, Jesus does something quite radical. Not only does he heal a woman who had been bleeding for years, but he brings a little girl back to life.
  • What do these two miracles have in common?
  • What do you know about girls back in Jesus' time?
  • Why do you think Jesus healed two girls?
  • What do you think the leaders would have thought, when they heard?
  • What do you think this tells us about how God values about girls?
  • What do you think God is reminding us in today's story?

Unpacking the story

The Growing Kids in Grace website has some ideas for today's lesson

Activities

  • A folded picture craft from JWL resources
  • Crafts from Growing in Grace website, which also has other ideas for the story about Jesus bringing Jairus' daughter back to life
  • Colouring in sheet (source unknown)

Games

The woman in today's story reached out to touch Jesus' clothes, and she was healed. Play a couple of games that include touch, like Tag, Thumbs up, Blindfold Tag, and Dodgeball.

Gospel Conversations

This is a conversation you'll want to listen to more than once. Kelvin, Nicki and Alec are dealing with one of the most beautiful sets of stories in the Gospels - the healing of the woman in the crowd and raising from death of the young girl - and they discover layer after layer of meaning and depth. As Michael says, one challenge will be choosing what to focus on if you're hoping this will assist your sermon-planning!

Psalm 130

Picture
Psalm 130 speaks of waiting for the Lord to answer, to hear the psalmist cry, to hear and respond. "I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope."
