Te Pouhere

Today's story helps us to understand the part we play in a three tikanga Anglican church. This has some lovely connections with our previous two Sundays (Trinity Sunday and Disability Awareness Sunday) where we have been exploring three as one, and our differences and commonalities.

What is Te Pouhere? 

Te Pouhere Sunday is the second Sunday after Pentecost, and is the day on which this Church celebrates it's Constitution / Te Pouhere, which establishes the three Tikanga (cultural streams) of this Church in this Province of Aotearoa New Zealand and Polynesia. The Anglican Church of Aotearoa New Zealand and Polynesia has three beautiful cultural strands or ways of doing things -- Maori, Pakeha and Pasifika. This relationship came into place in 1992, and the word Te Pouhere means constitution -- which, in te reo, also means a hitching post for a waka. There is one post (Christ) with three waka tied up to it.

​Te Pouhere Sunday reminds us that we are woven together as one beautiful church, and that all our diversity, experience, culture and wisdom makes us stronger together. We bring our stories, experiences, worship, prayers, faithfulness and trust in God together, to share as one body.
Our Three Tikanga (anglican.co.nz)
​​The 1992 Constitution of this Church provides for three partners to order their affairs within their own cultural context: Tikanga Maori; Tikanga Pakeha; Tikanga Pasefika.

Within Aotearoa New Zealand, Tikanga Pakeha comprises seven Dioceses, Tikanga Maori comprises five Hui Amorangi, the boundaries of which differ from those of the dioceses. Tikanga Pasefika encompasses Fiji, Tonga, Samoa and the Cook Islands, and is known as the Diocese of Polynesia.

The Tikanga Maori Hui Amorangi are: Te Pihopatanga o Te Tai Tokerau, Te Pihopatanga o Te Manawa o te Wheke, Te Pihopatanga o Te Tairawhiti, Te Pihopatanga o Te Upoko o te Ika, and Te Pihopatanga o Te Waipounamu.

The Tikanga Pakeha Dioceses are: Auckland, Waikato and Taranaki, Waiapu, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, and Dunedin.

The Tikanga Pasefika Diocese of Polynesia incorporates the ministry units of Polynesia in New Zealand, Vanua Levu and Taveuni, and Viti Levu West, and the Archdeaconries of Suva and Ovalau, Samoa and American Samoa, and Tonga.

Games / Starters

Sharing the Load:
You will need: something heavy, or an old towel
Ask a volunteer to pull the item (or person) from one side of the room to the other. Then get three people to do it together. 
Which is it easier or harder? Why?

Three Strands:
You will need: several pieces of string/wool/cord + something heavy. You will also need to do some testing beforehand to get the string thickness / weight heaviness right. 
Tie one piece of string to a heavy weight. Ask someone to pull the weight over to another spot. The string will break. Tie two pieces of string and repeat. The string will break. Tie three pieces of string and braid them together. Together they will be strong enough to pull the weight. 
Why could three move the weight when one couldn't? 

Three Legged Race:
You will need: some soft strips to tie legs together.
Pair up the kids and get them to run a three legged race with their legs tied together.
​Talking points: It can feel uncomfortable walking with someone else. They walk differently, their legs are longer/shorter than mine. It takes practice to learn to walk together. Why might we choose to walk together as a church?

Relay Race: 
You will need: a pile of items (try blocks, balloons, plastic eggs, etc). 
Mark a starting point and a finishing point. Put the items at the starting point. Challenge a volunteer to get as many items to the finishing line in 1 minute. (Repeat with different kids if you want). Then get three people to do it together at the same time.
Which way moved more blocks? 
 Variations:
  • Have a jar with paper strips listing "different ways to move them" - e.g. between your knees, hopping, on a spoon, backwards. Let each volunteer draw their method of moving before starting.
  • Have three different paths marked on the floor (with chalk or tape). Each person to use a different path. 
Talking points - Three people doing things in a different way (or taking a different path) but heading for the same goal, get more done than one person doing it in one way.

Children's Talk

I wonder how you found those games? Were they different with one person or with three? Were they harder? easier? What did you notice?

Well, I noticed that... (add in your thoughts and what the kids noticed), e.g. the person found it easier when there was a team and they had people to help share the load and stop them from feeling too tired.  

It made me think of when we see people in a waka (canoe). They each have a paddle to help. Show them a picture of a boat/waka. 

Today is Te Pouhere Sunday which is the celebration of the three strands that make up our Anglican Church in Aotearoa New Zealand. The three strands are tikanga Maori, tikanga Pakeha and tikanga Pasifika and they belong together because we all follow Jesus. 

Just like the games we played today, these three strands make up one really strong strand which is our church. The different cultural expressions of these strands weave together to make our Church. We celebrate our differences but we also come together to share the good news of Jesus in so many ways.

(Remind them of the way the wool was stronger in the Three Strands game - or if you skipped that one just use a piece of wool as an illustration – show the kids a single strand and get one of them to try and break it. Then show them the braided one and do the same…hopefully it will be too hard). Chat more about how three strands are stronger and how lucky we are in the Anglican Church to have three cultures to draw on and complement each other. 

Questions

  • What are the three strands of our church?
  • Is it easier to have our church be made up of people all the same, or people who are different? Why?
  • Is it better to have our church be made up of people all the same, or people who are different? Why?
  • I wonder what is important to Jesus?
  • What are some wonderful things about being a three strand church? What are some hard things?
  • Do you know which strand our church is in? Do you know anyone in one of the other strands? 
  • ​What is the one most important part of being church together?

Activity: Woven Crosses

A craft using a paper plate to weave a cross
Show the kids our three tikanga cross (see below) and talk about the meaning and symbolism. Have they seen it anywhere before? (Maybe in your church?)

​The artist, Ross Hemara, was asked by the Anglican Church to design an indigenous cross, picking up strands from all three Tikanga of the church in these islands. 

​Archbishop David Moxon shares info here about the symbolism. 


​​Then try this Paper Plate Yarn Cross craft (Non-Toy Gifts) but use red, white and black to make your own three tikanga crosses.   ​

Prayer Stations 

Pray for our wider Church and Communities
Put out a blown up map that includes New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.
You may like to mark any places, people you have links to. Or pictures for particular issues or celebrations you are aware of in particular places (try and have a mix of things to celebrate and things that need help). Give the kids post it notes and ask them to draw or write a thanks prayer and a please help prayer and stick it on the map.

Braided Prayers
Have a selection of pieces of brightly coloured ribbon/string/wool. Get each person to choose three different colours. Tie the three pieces of string together at one end. Children can tape the end of the string to a table while they braid or take turns holding the thread while a partner braids. If desired, they can add beads into their braid as they go. As they plait, pray together for our church to appreciate both its differences and our strength together. 
The unity of the braid makes the ribbon much stronger than they were separately.  How might this be similar when we join with others in community and with God?

Origami Waka
​In Te Reo, Te Pouhere means a hitching post for a waka (boat). There is one post (Christ) with three waka tied up to it.

​Make a place for the prayers. This can be a big map, a cloth, a table. If you are in church you might place them on the altar when you go up for communion.


​Write or draw prayers for our three tikanga on a piece of origami paper. 
Then fold it into a waka. Place the waka on the place you have made for them.

For little kids it may be easier to simply provide some cut out waka/boat shapes for them to draw their prayers on.

​We can finish our prayers by saying the following sentences in any of the languages honoured by Te Pouhere Sunday: ​
Tikanga Maori: Te Reo
Kia tau te rangimarie! (Peace be with you!) 
Tikanga Pasifika: Tongan
​'Eiki 'alo'ofa e (God of Love)  /  
Tali 'emu lotu (Grant our Prayer)
Tikanga Pasifika: Samoan
Think of something to be thankful for & respond with this phrase:
Faafetai lava (Thank you very much!)
Tikanga Pakeha: English
God of love, Grant our prayer

Jesus sets a man free (Luke 8:26-39)

 This week is the story of Jesus healing the demon possessed man. Gospel stories of demon possession are difficult to teach, because we generally  don’t experience demons as described in the Bible. This can be a tricky/scary story to share with kids so do be mindful of that. ​

"The story in this passage can be a fun, goofy, or challenging one to communicate to kids. How do we approach the topic of demons? What’s with the pigs? There are several elements that we can take from this encounter in Luke. We don’t want to ignore or avoid the spiritual forces present in the Bible, but it is important to let students know that Jesus is bigger than all of our fears. We can trust in Him and let the spirit of God rule our lives. When that happens, we are transformed and made new, just like the man in the story. And once we are new, we have a job to do telling others about the wonderful power of Jesus!" (Ministry to Children)

Intergenerational Worship

​Intergen Yr C Pentecost 2: A collection of resources and ideas, written and compiled by Jillian Ross Intergen Australia. Bible references: 1 Kings, Galations, Luke. The readings and material this week express a longing for God and an experiencing of God in different ways.

Games

A few light-hearted games might be a good way to start this session. Try these ones (adapted from Ministry to Children)

Dress up relay: 
You will need: as enough clothes, hats, accessories, etc for several teams. For added humour - try and include as many PINK items as you can and tell the kids that todays story involves a lot of running pigs.   
Split the kids into two teams. Allow each team to choose a “model” that will be decorated. Put the dress ups in buckets at one end of the room with each team, and have the models stand at the other end of the room. Time the activity and let the kids grab items out of the bucket (one at a time) and run across the room to dress the models. When the time runs out, you may choose a “winner” based on the number of items worn or creativity of the outfit. 

If pigs could fly:
Provide several small plastic pig toys. Allow students to take turns acting out the pig scene…you might let them push the pigs off a table, launch them catapult-fashion, or even fling them across the room! Have a small bucket of water available for them to land in. (Alternately use soft toy pigs and a dry bucket!) 

Kids Talks

Fear not! Jesus protects and transforms (Ministry to Children) - Full lesson plan including games, talk and crafts. Emphasis on kids knowing that Jesus is bigger than all our fears.

The Demon Possessed Man (St Barts Kids) - Lesson Plan including "read, chat, do, pray" sections for multiple age levels from preschool to Year 6. 

The man who lived in a graveyard (Sermon Writer) - very short simple talk that uses general language and doesn't mention demons.

Jesus casts out evil spirits: Sculpt it, act it, guess it, write it, pray it (ChildrensMinistry.com) - explore the story in different ways.

Activities

​Make-over man mania (Ministry to Children) - On a large sheet of butcher paper, draw an outline of a person. Or you might even use a Halloween skeleton decoration, if one is available. Provide students with items like paper clothes, eyes, hearts, etc., and have them “change” the man to make him a whole person again.

Transform biscuits - start with some plain biscuits and provide decorations to transform them into something new. Try pink icing, mini marshmallows and  some liquorice or black lollies to make pig cookies or go more general and see what magic the kids create.

Scratch Paper - This is a fun way to explore the idea that God is with us even when all seems dark. Why not cut a person shape out of scratch paper. Let the kids scratch away the top layer to see peace and beauty hiding underneath.

Preschool Play

Tell the Story - This is a challenging and complicated story to share with your preschoolers! Some options:
  • Try the short and simple talk The man who lived in a graveyard (Sermon Writer).
  • Use one of these lesson plans instead - they focus on themes of God's power and protection (Ministry to Children). All include full lesson plans and fun activities! Try:
    • God is All Powerful
    • God is my Fortress
    • God is my Shield 
  • If your church has access to Godly Play resources, you could tell the story of The Good Shepherd.
​
Story props / Small world play - Put out some people and some animals and felt or paper shapes to represent land & water. Depending on your story you could try pigs and people, or sheep and a shepherd. Include some "dangers" - e.g. dangerous animals, ponds etc. 
Things to chat about - the story and what happened.

God is bigger than everything bad! - grab a parachute or a big piece of fabric. Get enough adults/leaders to hold the edges so they can lift it up and down. Play some music and encourage the kids to move around. When the music stops, lift the parachute up and the kids have to run under the parachute and sit down while it comes down over them. Repeat until everyone is exhausted!
Things to chat about: how God's love surrounds us and keeps us safe

Pray it!

Bubblewrap Prayers 
Who loves bubblewrap! (Me!) Not only is it fun to pop but you can wrap precious things in it and it will protect them. Why not try some bubblewrap prayers about things that make us afraid or worried?

Have some small squares or strips of bubble wrap - one for each kid. Get the kids to think about something they feel afraid or worried about. They can tell God about it and ask him to protect and help them. Then pop a bubble to show you have given this fear or worry to God. If you have more than one fear or worry do it again for each one.

Finish by holding the bubble wrap. Remind the kids that just like bubblewrap can protect precious things - we are precious to God and his love wraps around us. Thank you God!

You may like to send them home with some more bubblewrap for worries during the week!
