Collect

Almighty and merciful God,
you hate nothing that you have made and forgive the sins of all who are penitent;
create in us new and contrite hearts, so that when we turn to you and confess our sins we may receive your full and perfect forgiveness;
through Jesus Christ our Redeemer.
Amen.

E te Atua kaha rawa, atawhai anō hoki,
kāhore koe e mauāhara ki ngā mea kua hangā e koe, ā,
e murua ana e koe ngā hara katoa o te hunga ngākau rīpenetā;
hangā ki roto i a mātou he ngākau hōu, he ngākau iro,
kia tahuri ai mātou ki a koe ki te whāki i ō mātou hara,
ka whiwhi mātou ki te tino houhanga o te rongo;
ko Īhu Karaiti tō mātou Kaihoko. Āmine.

Ash Wednesday

What is Ash Wednesday?

“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
~Book of Common Prayer p. 265.

In the Christian Church, Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent. During Lent, Christians may fast or give up some of their usual routine to give time to personal examination and to reflect on their relationship with God. We acknowledge that we have not loved God with our whole hearts, and we prepare our hearts as remember how we belong to God, and to God we will return.

Why a cross of ashes?

Picture
The Palm crosses from the previous year are burnt and mixed with anointing oil, and used to mark a cross on a foreheads of believers.

"We receive the cross of ashes in the same place as the cross of oil we receive at baptism, for the same reason: to remind us that we were created in love, we belong to God, and we will return to God." - Building Faith. The shape of the cross reminds us that through Jesus we are forgiven and free.

The Season of Lent

Lent is a season in the Church calendar that last for forty days (not counting Sundays). It starts on Ash Wednesday and runs through to the Saturday before Easter Sunday. It is a time when Christians reflect and prepare for the celebrations of Easter. It is a time for turning away from the things that lead us away from God, and turning towards our Creator.

Questions

  • What Season in the church year starts with Ash Wednesday?
  • Why do we have Lent?
  • Why doesn’t the forty days of Lent include Sundays?
  • What might you give up or do during Lent to prepare for Easter?

Pancake Day!

Have you ever celebrated Pancake Day? Did you know there was a Pancake Day? What a great excuse to eat all the pancakes you want! Also known as Shrove Tuesday, this was traditionally a chance for one big last party before Lent started. Why not encourage your church or households to throw a pancake party and invite some friends who don't know Jesus yet.

Special Days in Lent

  • Palm Sunday
  • Holy Week -  see the Strandz website for LOTS of Holy Week resources.

Art in Lent

If you want to mark Advent in a simple rich way, how about creating a space where your kids can spend some time with Jesus-related art.

Try these questions or make up your own:
  • What do you see?
  • What part of the bible / God's story is this painting about?
  • What might this show us about God? About people? About our world?
  • What do you think is important in this picture?
  • Does anything in this picture have more than one meaning?
  • I wonder what God might be saying to you through this picture today?
